The groups were split up in the preliminaries to balance out the talent, fitness, swimsuit and evening wear competitions each night. Winners were filtered by the judges and the top ten were chosen to return Saturday evening for the final judging.

Ashley Taylor, a coordinator of student development and the Miss Tech pageant, said she went to all three nights of the pageant to support Tech's contestants during the competition.

"I was very excited about it and I was very proud to have so many representatives from Louisiana Tech," Taylor said. "I loved the talent competition because it is what makes Miss Louisiana so special."

Taylor said she watched two recipients of the Miss Tech title, Abshier (2009) and Thibodeaux (2008), compete in their various events and was able to see Thibodeaux advance to the finals of the competition.

"We have some pretty amazing ladies on our campus," Taylor said. "We had one [former Miss Tech, Julie Lawrence] who won first runner up in the Miss America contest in 1999."
