Six current or former Tech students participated in the Miss Louisiana Pageant in Monroe June 18-20.

Six Tech students and alumnae competed in the Miss Louisiana Pageant 2009 in at the Monroe Civic Center last weekend, making Tech the school with the most competitors in the pageant.

The students who competed for Miss Louisiana 2009 June 18-20 were alumna Lacy Thibodeaux, Lauren Abshier, Nicole Fairburn, Rebecca Price, Lexie McKenzie and Jenny Russell.

But at the end of the competition, the Miss Louisiana crown went to Katherine Putnam of Monroe, who won the judges over with a stunning musical display on the piano, fortitude during the interviews, and beauty in the gown and swimsuit competitions.

Price, a sophomore kinesiology major and current Miss Louisiana Stockshow, said she was prepared for the pageant because she had been in several Miss Teen Louisiana Pageants in previous years.

"I was kind of nervous that it was going to be a lot different from the Miss Teen pageant, but it was a lot of fun," she said.

Price, whose platform for the pageant was Arts in Education, dazzled the audience with a vocal performance of the song "Home" from the Broadway musical "The Wiz."

"We had stuff to do from as soon as we woke up to about midnight," Price said. "We did luncheons, fashion shows at Dillard's, and lots of rehearsals."

Price said she worked hard throughout the year in preparation for the pageant and kept on by reassuring herself that everything would work out.

Dewanna Little, executive director for the Miss Louisiana organization, said the six women from Tech did an outstanding job, performing and standing out.

"It's very unusual to have six women from the same university," Little said. "It speaks to how strong the students are at Tech because Miss Louisiana is the cream of the crop."

Little said the women performed various community services for different platforms
including the Children's Miracle Network.

The 29 contestants logged more than 20,000 hours in community service.

The pageant preliminaries split the 29 ladies into two groups: the Magnolia group and the Azalea group.

Tech students in the Magnolia group were Abshier, Price and Russell.
Thibodeaux, McKenzie and Fairburn rounded were in the Azalea group.
